In this tutorial, we will be installing a Rainwater HOG modular rain storage tank.

Step 1:

Installing a Rainwater HOG - Step 1

Find a great place to locate the HOG. In this case, I will be installing it next to where I already have a down-spout attached to my roof-gutter system. This will eliminate the need for me to run an additional down-spout specifically for the HOG.

Step 2:

Installing a Rainwater HOG - Step 2

I purchased a flexible plastic tube at my local Home Depot, which I will use to tie into my existing down-spout. I simply unscrewed the clamps that held in the original tube and slid on the new flexible tubing.

Step 3:

Installing a Rainwater HOG - Step 3

Lay your new Rainwater HOG on it’s side and use a saw to cut off the top cap. There is an indent that makes it easy keep the saw cutting straight. It only took me about 30 seconds to cut it.

Step 4:

Installing a Rainwater HOG - Step 4

On the other end of the HOG from the hole you just cut, install ball valve that will allow you to connect a hose, and also open and close the water flow from the tank. This just screws right into the threaded hole.

Step 5:

Installing a Rainwater HOG - Step 5

Install the included breather valve into one of the top holes, right on the side of the tank, at the same end as the hole you cut. (Top side of the tank)

Step 6:

Installing a Rainwater HOG - Step 6

Slide the included hole filter over the side of the hole you cut. Don’t use any glue when attaching this. Down the road, you will need to remove this to clean it of any debris it will collect.

Step 7:

Installing a Rainwater HOG - Step 7

Connect flexible tube and mount in place. In my case I didn’t need to formally mount the tank to the wall, as the corner I am using offered plenty of support. However, if you want to bolt it in place, you can easily do this with the optional wall mounting kit.

Other Options:

  • You can link multiple hogs together. Each HOG comes complete with a tube that will allow you link them together. Combine hogs to increase your total rain storage in 50 gallon increments
  • You can install the HOG horizontally. If you do this, you will need to also install a water pump.

**Update:

If you want to attach a standard garden hose to the bottom valve on your Rainwater HOG, you will need a couple adapters.

You will need:

  • 1 inch to 3/4 inch reducer (found in the PVC piping section of your local DIY store)
  • 3/4 inch pipe thread to 3/4 inch hose thread adapter (found in the irrigation section)
